During a recent meeting between Trade Minister Nalin Fernando and Egyptian Ambassador Maged Mosleh at the trade ministry in Sri Lanka, discussions focused on the Sri Lanka-Egypt Joint Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation (JCTEC) as a pivotal platform for bolstering bilateral economic relations.
The possibility of convening the next JCTEC session in June was considered by Sri Lanka. Ambassador Mosleh highlighted Africa's market potential, suggesting Sri Lankan exporters leverage Egypt as a gateway, especially benefiting from relaxed rules of origin under a free trade agreement.
The meeting also covered potential imports of big onion from Egypt to Sri Lanka, with Ambassador Mosleh expressing Egypt's support for such initiatives. The dialogue further explored enhancing trade and economic cooperation through exhibitions and foreign delegations.
