The real growth in the sweet potato segment stems from value-added packs

This is the time of year California is gearing up for the 2024/2025 sweet potato crop. It all starts with the "hot beds", the initial phase of the propagation process where seeds are bedded, giving rise to slips over a 45-day period. The transplanting stage spans two months, wrapping up around mid-June, just before the summer heat reaches its peak. "Each variety has a different standard as far as optimal growing days, but generally speaking, the window from transplant to harvest is 90 to 130 days," says Matt McCort, Executive Vice President at Bako Sweet. This translates into harvest taking place between mid-July and October. Despite the amount of rainfall California has received this year, season's plantings are still on target.

"The real groundwork for success in this crop year, however, was laid in Q4 of 2023," shared McCort. "That's when we crafted our comprehensive sales plan, detailing strategies for each variety – both organic and conventional." With this plan in hand, the timing and planting methods for each field were strategized, considering factors like harvest schedules, microclimates, and other crucial elements. "The most effective programs stem from thoughtful collaboration with our retail and foodservice partners, aligning our objectives with theirs, syncing promotional calendars, and above all, meeting the needs of shoppers and consumers alike."

Growth in value-added
"While bulk sales of sweet potatoes remain significant, the real growth in the category stems from value-added packs," says Susan Noritake, Director of Sales at Bako Sweet. As spring unfolds, Bako Sweet's 3 lb. and 5 lb. mesh bags emerge as customer favorites. "As Memorial Day and grilling season approach, our tray packs take the spotlight, featuring three to four perfectly sized sweet potatoes, ready to be thrown on the grill." Pre-washed and ideal for spring and summer gatherings, they make feeding friends and family a breeze. "Because of the convenient size offerings, value-added products continue to be a go-to for shoppers," Noritake commented.

Sweet potato steaks
Bako Sweet's up-and-coming grilling campaigns will feature sweet potato steaks that leverage the company's jumbo orange sweet potatoes. "This will be a fun way to engage consumers during months where we typically see lower consumption," Noritake said. "We understand shoppers' desire for innovative ways to enjoy sweet potatoes and we're confident this initiative will entice them to seek out Bako Sweet products for their summer barbecues, just in time for Labor Day. "
