The Canary Islands is already exporting bananas to Poland

The first truckload of bananas was sent to Poland on January 10, 2024, and the bananas were sold that same weekend. After that, trucks were sent for the next two weeks and, since the product was well received, truck shipments were contracted for four more weeks.

"Since then, exporters have sent almost 400,000 kg of certified bananas have been sent to this destination. It's a high-quality banana. In the first shipments, it was packaged in biodegradable flowpacks. Later, we opted for the Gabaceras banana brand," stated Elisa Martínez Duque, Marketing Manager of Europlátano.

"Historically, exporting abroad has been an important part of our commercial strategy. For years, we've developed successful projects in profitable markets such as the French or the Swiss, which have led to a huge investment of time and means; but they are the basis for building the sector's future," she stated.

"The company's partners believe in opening new markets to achieve stable and fair prices. In 2023, we recovered the Swiss market after the pause caused by the eruption of La Palma's volcano. In addition, our fruit began to have a presence in the German and French markets, where we are working on new export projects," she stated.

This constant initiative to search for small-value market niches reaffirms the company's international business strategy. "We can't only bet on the international market when there is a surplus of product in the peninsular market. It's an investment to build a future for the Canary Islands' banana sector. We must create relationships of trust with customers in the European continent offering quality, service, and transparency that continues over time," Elisa Martínez stressed.

Europlatano's latest major project consists of building new maturation warehouses in the north of the Peninsula that, together with the ones it already manages in Alicante, allow it to service its customers in the entire territory without intermediaries. This maturation capacity will be doubled soon thanks to the new facility the company is building in Bilbao. With it, the company will be able to provide direct service to the entire Peninsula in the second half of 2024.
